FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Know before you go

Some handy information

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

What Should I wear for my flight?

Our aircraft tends to be a bit warmer than the ground, especially on sunny days. Since every seat is by a window, you might catch some sunshine during your flight!

  • On sunny days, a t-shirt is usually comfy.

  • On cooler or cloudy days, bring a light jacket or jumper.

  • Feeling comfortable and cool can help you enjoy the flight and reduce the chance of motion sickness.

  • Don’t forget your shoes—they’re required on board for safety.

What is the likelihood of seeing a whale?

We’re pretty lucky to spot whales on most flights, over 90% of the time! That said, they’re wild animals, so sightings can’t be guaranteed.
Weather, sea conditions, and the whales’ own behaviour such as  diving, hunting, or resting can all affect what you see.
Even if a whale doesn’t make an appearance, you’ll still get an amazing view of Kaikōura’s coastline and wildlife from above!

What whales will I see?

The stars of the show in Kaikōura are Sperm Whales, who are semi-resident here.
We also see lots of migrating species, like Humpback Whales from June-October. Orca pop up mostly in summer, and Baleen Whales, like Blue Whales and Fin Whales, are more common then too, though sometimes they appear at other times of the year.
Every day and every flight is different which makes it all the more exciting!

What is the best time of day to see the whales?

Sperm whales are in Kaikōura all year round, feeding in the rich waters of the underwater Kaikōura Canyon. They usually dive to feed, then come up to breathe, and can spend anywhere from 40 to 80 minutes underwater at a time, so there isn’t really a “best” time, they can appear at any time of day!

Is there a maximum weight limit?

Yes- our seat weight limit is 120 kg per person to ensure safe flying conditions. If you think you might be close to this please give us a call and we’ll chat through the options together.

Can I choose where I sit on the flight?

We’re happy to take seating requests, but we can’t always guarantee them. Seats are arranged each flight to keep the aircraft balanced, so your exact spot may vary.
The good news? Everyone gets a window seat, so you’ll have a great view no matter where you’re sitting!
