ABOUT US

Flying over Kaikōura since 1983

Our Story

About Us

Since 1983, we’ve been Kaikōura’s wings in the sky.

Nestled between the rugged Kaikōura mountains and the expansive Pacific Ocean, Air Kaikōura Aero Club has flown our community, visitors, and wildlife lovers on incredible journeys for over 40 years. What began in 1983 as a passion for flying has grown into a trusted local institution — one built on safety, connection, and love for this landscape.

Our Story

  • In the early years, we started with smaller aircraft like the Piper PA-28 Cherokee and Cessna 206, pioneering whale-watching flights over Kaikōura’s coastline.

  • In 1995, our runway was upgraded (sealed), funded by both club members and local support, to improve safety and reliability.

  • After the hiatus in late 1990s, Air Kaikōura returned stronger in the early 2000s. Whale flights regained popularity, and today they’re central to what we do.

  • During the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake, when roads were damaged and access was cut off, we stepped in. We organized shuttle flights to ensure residents could get supplies and stayed connected to essential services. It was a time that tested us, and strengthened our resolve.

  • In 2023, we marked 40 years of flight training, whale watching, scenic and charter services, celebrating all the stories, pilots, staff, and passengers who've made this journey possible.

What We Believe In:
  • Safety First. Our pilots are locally trained, seasoned, and committed to keeping every flight secure and smooth.

  • Connection & Community. As a locally-owned aero club, we’re here for Kaikōura, not just as a business, but as neighbours.

  • Respect for Nature. We fly with care over marine life, wilderness, and coastline, honoring the land and ocean we’re privileged to share.

  • Joy in the Journey. Every flight is more than a ride; it’s a view, an experience, a story.
