Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
Founded in 1984 .... ABOUT THE CLUB

Our Story
Nestled between the rugged Kaikōura mountains and the expansive Pacific Ocean, the Kaikōura Aero Club has been a beacon for aviation enthusiasts and a pillar of the community since its establishment in 1983. Operating from the Kaikōura Airfield, the club has a rich history intertwined with the region's development and resilience.
The Kaikōura Airfield itself was inaugurated in 1964, featuring a 575-meter grass runway. By the mid-1990s, increased air traffic and challenges such as rabbit-induced damage necessitated significant upgrades. In 1995, the runway was sealed, a project funded through 80% of the cost covered by airfield users and the remaining 20% by local rates.
In the early 1990s, recognizing the unique opportunity presented by Kaikōura's abundant marine life, the club initiated whale-watching flights under the banner of Air Tours Kaikōura. Utilizing aircraft like the Piper PA-28 Cherokee and Cessna 206, these flights offered passengers unparalleled aerial views of majestic sperm whales and the stunning coastline. After a brief hiatus following the closure of Air Tours Kaikōura in 1999, the club revived these popular flights in the early 2000s under the name Air Kaikōura, solidifying its role in the region's tourism industry.
The club's commitment to the community was profoundly demonstrated following the November 2016 earthquake, which isolated Kaikōura due to significant road damage. Air Kaikōura swiftly organized shuttle flights to Blenheim's Omaka aerodrome and Rangiora, ensuring essential connectivity for residents and the delivery of vital supplies. Additionally, we operated regular shuttle services between Kaikōura and Parikawa, aiding locals affected by the disaster.
In 2023, the Kaikōura Aero Club celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of passion for flying, training the next generation of pilots, and giving back to the community. The milestone was commemorated with a weekend-long celebration, reflecting on the club's journey and its contributions to the region and celebrating the many people that made it all possible.
Today, the club continues to offer flight training, whale & scenic flights, and charter services, playing a pivotal role in both aviation and tourism in the Kaikōura region.
The Kaikōura Aero Club remains dedicated to fostering a love for aviation and serving the community.
