Learn to Fly - Obtain your Pilot License!

Kaikoura Aero club owns and operates from its own building and utilizes two aircraft with a full-time instructor to oversee flight training.
 
  • Two active runways, one sealed vector (700m) and one grass vector (575m) allow students to become accustomed to both type of surfaces.
  • There are no landing fees for Kaikoura Aero Club pilots and because the airfield is not situated in a control zone there are no airways charges.
  • The training areas are close to the airfield so time in transit is minimized and training time is used fully.
  • Mountains in excess of 8000ft are within 15 minutes of flying providing an ideal opportunity for students to experience mountain flying.

We fly with a:
C-150A - Cessna 150 Aerobat
This is a two seater training aircraft which is fully aerobatic. With a 100 hp engine it cruises at 80 kts and is utilised for the majority of students training up to their PPL.

PA-28-181 - Piper Cherokee Archer
This is our Piper Cherokee Archer four seat aircraft with a 180 hp engine, it cruises at 120 kts and is utilized mainly for whale watching and cross-country flying before and after obtaining the pilot license.

Private Pilots Licence
 A private licence allows you to fly anywhere in New Zealand with friends and family. A new Zealand PPL also allows you to fly overseas with each country having its own requirements to use you licence.
 
Course Requirements

To obtain a PPL you must:
  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Hold a current Class 2 Medical Certificate
  • Pass six PPL theory exams:
            - Flight Radiotelephony
            - Aviation Law
            - Air Navigation and Flight Planning
            - Metrology
            - Aircraft Technical Knowledge
            - Human Factors
     
  • Complete al least 50 hours of flying time made up of:
            - 15 hours dual instructions
            - 15 hours solo flight time
            - Advanced dual instruction
            - 5 hours instrument time
            - 10 hours cross-country navigation flying
     
  • Complete a PPL flight test which consists of normal and emergency in-flight manouvers being demonstrated to a testing officer.
 
 
Commercial Pilots Licence
 A commercial licence allows you to work for hire or reward within New Zealand and Australia and also in other countries around the world if you meet their requirements.
 
Course Requirements

To obtain a CPL you must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a current Class 1 Medical Certificate
  • Pass six CPL theory exams:
            - Principles of Flight
            - Aviation Law
            - Air Navigation and Flight Planning
            - Metrology
            - Aircraft Technical Knowledge
            - Human Factors
     
  • Complete al least 200 hours of flying time made up of:
            - At least 100 hours solo flight time
            - 10 hours instrument time
            - 10 hours cross-country navigation flying
     
  • Complete a CPL flight test with a testing officer.
